Edheads Heart Surgery

Edheads.org website is a totally unique way to learn about the human body through a series of virtual “surgeries.”  Edheads Heart Surgery takes you step by step through repairing a weakened aorta, and is one of many lessons offered by the Edhead’s site.  With information on the parts of the heart and the functions of the veins and arteries, this animated lesson is a fascinating way to boost a student’s understanding of the cardiac system.

After a quick introduction, Edheads Heart Surgery takes you on an interactive tour of blockages of the heart.  By clicking on various

parts of the heart, the student can see how blockages would affect sections of cardiac muscle.  An actual sonogram of the heart shows the damage done to the virtual patient’s heart by a weakened aorta and explains what makes the patient a candidate for this surgery.

Edheads Heart Surgery makes learning cardiac anatomy fun and exciting.

The student becomes the surgeon as the doctor explains, step by step, how the aorta is repaired.  A pre-opertaive surgical plan is presented and includes placing the patient on antibiotics, checking vital signs, and covering the patient with a drape.  A virtual anesthesiologist places the patient under sedation while the doctor explains how to prep the patient for surgery.

The surgical instruments and their use are explained fully, and the procedure begins.  The student is guided through the entire operation with clear explanations of the anatomy he will encounter, the instruments he will use, and what he can expect at each stage of the surgery.  Various surgical techniques are discussed, along with the reasons for choosing a particular one.   The student guides the virtual “scalpel” with the mouse, and performs the surgery.  After the surgery, the student takes part in the post-operative portion of the procedure and stitches the patient’s incision.

In Edheads Heart Surgery, the student successfully repairs the aorta and ultimately saves the patient’s life.

There are real pictures of the heart, both healthy and diseased, for comparison and information.  Not overly gory, there is just enough realism to keep a student interested in the lesson.

Edheads Heart Surgery is slated for kids from grades seven through twelve, but it would be a great study companion for any one of any age who is learning anatomy and physiology of the heart.  Student nurses, EMT’s, and Paramedics would all benefit from this easy to

use, fun and interactive lesson.  Simple and concise explanations in the format of a game make this an ideal companion for duller, sometimes difficult to understand lessons from lectures and text books.  Technical terms and cardiac anatomy are presented in a clear, easy to understand manner.

Edheads Heart Surgery is just one of many free, educational games on the Edheads website. The lessons cover Anatomy and Physiology as well as other technical or general subjects, such as weather prediction, crash scene investigation, and simple machines.
